The show features creations from 25 Outer Banks artists whose specialties include painting, pottery, jewelry, photography, basketry, glasswork, fiber and textile arts, collage, metalwork and more. The show is well known for the high quality of work presented by its talented participants. A portion of artists' fees go to the two local charities - N.E.S.T. and the Outer Banks Relief Foundation.

The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum is hosting an Underwater Heritage Symposium bringing together state, local and regional professionals in the diving and underwater archaeology fields. The two-day symposium provides the opportunity to connect with leading experts that bring knowledge from the Graveyard of the Atlantic to the surface. Discover what it takes to manage beach wrecks in the digital age and how State budget cuts affect that process and learn about educational opportunities such as the Nautical Archaeology Society Training Initiative and Maritime Heritage Education Programs. For 2014, from May through October, monthly full moon climbs are being offered at both the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and the Bodie Island Lighthouse. Tickets for the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse full moon climbs may be purchased in person at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Ticket Booth. Tickets for the Bodie Island Lighthouse full moon climbs may be purchased in person at the Bodie Island Visitor Center. Tickets for these climbs go on sale beginning two days before the climb. Advanced purchase of tickets is required, and the tickets do sell out fast, so be sure to stop by as soon as they go on sale.

There will be rest stops complete with restrooms, water and an assortment of snacks & fruit. Support vehicles will also be on hand to provide assistance if needed. Lunch provided.

He will be available September 27 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to document your family photos, stories or artifacts that are related to North Carolina whaling. The East Carolina University graduate student is attempting to catalog artifacts, record stories and meet with descendants of whalers from the Outer Banks for his master thesis project. The NC Lions Visually Impaired Persons (VIP) Fishing Tournament held each October on the Outer Banks, is the largest gathering of blind and visually impaired persons in NC and its believed to be the largest event of its kind in North America. Now in it's 31st year, the project has grown from a local tournament serving 12 blind children to more than 525 participants. The 3-day event that features fishing, fellowship, recreational activities, motivational presentations, demonstrations and new technologies that will enhance the experiences's of VIP's.

Each fall, Wings Over Water Wildlife Festival plays host to hundreds of visitors who travel from near and far to experience the offerings of the Outer Banks and the nearby mainland portions of Eastern North Carolina. Set for Oct. 21-26, 2014, the 6-day event is held in the shoulder season when lodging rates are lower, there is less traffic and the weather is mild. The OBX is home to a diverse and fascinating array of wildlife to view, waterways to paddle, art to enjoy, and history to learn. In addition to marine life, black bears, alligators and Red Wolves, hundreds of species of birds are waiting to be spotted. Paddlers enjoy gliding through the backwaters, the sounds and even the Atlantic Ocean. Birders take advantage of the 6-day event to add to their life lists - with more than 400 species reported in the regions!

Cape Hatteras Anglers Club Invitational Surf Fishing Tournament

The Cape Hatteras Anglers Club was founded in 1957 and held its first invitational surf fishing tournament that year. The intent of the tournament was to bring visitors to Hatteras Island and to help spread the word that surf fishing is at its best in the fall. The Cape Hatteras Invitational Surf Fishing Tournament is the largest surf fishing tournament of its kind on the East Coast, and possibly the world.

On Wednesday and Friday nights we have an open house from 7 -9 p.m. for all the tournament participants and their guests. On Thursday night there is a tackle show at the clubhouse which is open to the public. 120 teams will participate in the tournament. On Friday evening prizes, gift certificates and trophies are awarded to members of the top three teams. On Saturday morning we host an individual fishing tournament, open to the public. Entry fees are waived for participants under 16 years of age.

Join us for this Thanksgiving Day Surfin' Turkey 5K and Drumstick Dash Fun Run, hosted by Hatteras Village and presented by the Hatteras Island Youth Education Fund (HIYEF). This organization is dedicated to helping the children of Hatteras Island and the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Running this beautiful 5K course supports the youth all across Dare County to have more opportunities for education and enrichment. The proceeds of this race support the Hatteras Island Youth Education fund. By putting on your running shoes, you will help us reach out to less fortunate families that are unable to afford for their children to participate in the program. This fundraiser will also help cover the costs associated with our children's races that we hold twice a year at the completion of their training.

Looking for something to do with the family after Thanksgiving? Come to Island Farm as we interpret fall food traditions and share how Roanoke Island families prepared for winter during the 1850s. Some activities will include: hearth cooking, food preservation, candle making and ox-drawn wagon rides from 10am - noon, corn shucking and shelling in the afternoon. Bring a nonperishable food item and receive $1 off the standard admission. Goods will be donated to the Roanoke Island Food Pantry. Admission $6 ($5 if donating nonperishable food item); children ages 5 and under free.
