Outer Banks Fishing Report
The Outer Banks Fishing Report is provided by David Wilson, captain of The Godspeed - a custom 57' deep-sea fishing charter that is a pure fishing monster!
Tuesday, February 25, 2014: Pulling The Trigger
The inshore bottom fishing was excellent today, as it has been.
We caught triggerfish until these guys had enough and went looking for something else. The current was screaming in the deep, so no big bottom fish today. We did find a beautiful grass line and caught a dolphin and missed a couple others. Thanks guys!
Saturday, February 22, 2014: All Over The Bottom
Since the tuna fishing has been scrappy, I gave my guys the option of trying something different. They were game.
Fortunately, we were blessed with not much current, which made bottom fishing much easier. We started out catching all the triggers that they wanted before moving offshore to bigger and better things. Shawn caught a citation 35 pound snowy grouper on a jig, and we had great action on the golden tiles. Box full of sweet meat! Thanks again Pat!
Sunday, February 16, 2014: February 16th Hatteras Offshore Report
Only two of us fished today, and we were both looking for a bluefin but were unable to find one.
It was a pretty nice day offshore, and we had some trolling action even though it wasn't what we were looking for. We still managed to land a couple of nice blackfins (one was a citation 20 pounder), a dolphin and a bunch of false albacore. It was great to get back offshore, and always a pleasure fishing with your group JP. Thanks!
Tuesday, February 11, 2014: Let It Snow!
Today the kids got out of school early, and it wasn't a very good day to do boat work, but I snapped a few pictures of the snow while Simon and I were out and about!
It's still coming down out there, and I'd have to guess that we have four inches of accumulation right now. It's perfect snowball material, and I'm sure when he comes in from his third round of romping, Simon will be just as wet as he was the other times!
Sunday, February 9, 2014: Youth Duck Hunt
Yesterday I had the privilege of accompanying my son and a couple of his friends on a youth duck hunt. It was an extra special event!
In this day of X- Boxes, Gameboys, laptops and cell phones, there is nothing that makes me happier than seeing my son take an interest in the outdoors. This year he has gotten involved with the local shooting team and has a growing interest in hunting. Yesterday was his first duck hunt, and he did great. There was a lot of action and the kids all shot plenty of shells! Next winter the ducks better watch out!
Saturday, February 1, 2014: Deep Dropping In The Tide
My buddy Keith wanted to catch something big and tasty off the bottom. Unfortunately the current was screaming, which made deep dropping a struggle.
We did catch a couple of rose fish and a couple of golden tiles, one of which was a 35 pounder. Late in the day I shallowed up to try for some triggers, but the current had us wrapped up in there too. The triggers were snappin' though, and we got all we wanted. Enjoy the fish at your super bowl party Keith, and remember what I told you about the goldens!
Thursday, January 23, 2014: Created A Monster
This time of year, when it's cold and blowing, I'm usually piddling in my shop or on my boat, getting things ready for the next season.
The last couple days have been devoted to working on my fighting chair and re-wrapping some rods. Simon has had off from school and wound up finding projects of his own in the shop. With his new found fascination with waterfowl hunting, all he talks about is guns and dogs. He has rummaged through my scrap pile of juniper and started tracing out patterns of guns for me to cut out for him. Here he is with his latest pump shotgun. Notice the newly painted handgun drying to his right!
Sunday, January 19, 2014: Maryland Goose Hunt
My buddy Mike invited me, Simon and my dad up for a goose hunt, and it turned out to be an outstanding experience to share with them!
We hunted Friday evening, Saturday morning, and saturday evening. We saw a lot of birds on each hunt, but Saturday evening was as good as it gets. Thanks again for a wonderful weekend, and I can't wait to put you guys on a load of fish this summer!
Sunday, January 5, 2014: A New Year!
It's cold where you are, so you should give some thought to warming up in Hatteras!
We've been plucking along at the kings commercially, some days we scrap out a fair catch and we've had a few big days too. There are a few things going on that would be of interest to somebody that's ready to bend a pole. You could still have some good live bait action with the kings right now. There is a great sign of blackfin tuna that could be caught on the jigs or trolling, and as of January 1, snowy grouper and golden tiles opened back up, so you could harvest some good stuff from the bottom too. I am thinking about when to schedule my spring "haul out", and as I glanced at my other propeller that is sitting outside my shop, re-worked and ready to go, I noticed this frog sitting comfortably on the hub. I hope the fish raise to it just as good this year!
Monday, December 30, 2013: Hatteras Style Kings
Only a couple of us tried it today but I'm glad I was one of them!
We commercial fished for kings today and sent 2,100 pounds to the market. Great way to end a year!TEST
